Improv Methods Can Improve Communication, Relationship Skills

HOLYOKE—Izzy Gesell, a certified speaking professional, will hold a workshop on Jan. 7 from 9 a.m. to noon at Holyoke Community College on improving personal and professional creativity, communication and relationship skills.

Gesell said “Practiced Spontaneity: Applying Improv Theater Principles to Enhance Personal and Professional Success” will be an “experiential, groundbreaking and laugh-filled” workshop that offers insights, skills and tactics geared toward anyone who wants to be grounded, creative and innovative. The event will be held at the college’s Kittredge Center, 303 Homestead Ave. The cost is $129.

The workshop is aimed at people in the areas of sales, marketing, business development, advertising, product development, problem solving, management, leadership and entrepreneurship.

Through engaging and fun exercises, the workshop will help attendees to better generate useful ideas, respond to challenges in a more effective way, open up to new or uncomfortable ideas and recognize ways to

After the workshop, participants will come away with:

An increased understanding of how individuals, groups and organizations function.

  • More self-awareness of behavior and perceived limitations.
  • An enhanced ability to influence people and processes, including helping groups discuss and deal with challenging issues.
  • Methods for becoming more comfortable with change, more receptive to new ideas and less risk averse.

Gesell, who has a master’s degree in education, is also a business coach and keynote speaker. He is the author of publications on improvisation, humor and personal and organizational effectiveness. He has led hundreds of workshops worldwide.
