State, Local Politicians Break Ground on Rail Trail Rehab

NORTHAMPTON - State and local politicians gathered with officials from the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation Monday morning for a groundbreaking ceremony at the Elwell Recreation Area on Damon Road.

In attendance were State Representatives John Scibak (D- 2nd Hampshire), Peter Kocot (D-1st Hampshire), U.S. Congressman James McGovern (D- MA 2nd), former Congressman John Olver and Northampton Mayor David Narkewicz, who applauded the DCR's efforts in planning and developing the $4 million rehabilitation project.

According to the DCR's website, the state and federally funded project aims to both rehabilitate the rail trail through construction assess "existing conditions and natural resources".
