Prop 2 1/2 Override Passes

Northampton voters passed Proposition 2 ½ override on Tuesday night. The proposed override will allow Northampton to raise the 2.5% annual tax levy limit set by state law—raising citizen taxes and increasing the city budget by $2.5 million. The increase was proposed to help avoid job cuts in school systems, the police department, and other community programs. The proposition, pitched by Mayor David J. Narkewicz, won by over 1,000 votes: 6,056 voting yes and 4,641 voting no.
