Oxbow Water Ski Show Team to Kick Off 2013 Season on July 5

NORTHAMPTON – The Oxbow Water Ski Show Team will kick off its 2013 summer season with a first show on July 5 at 7 p.m. at the Oxbow Sports Center at 100 Old Springfield Road.

This year’s show theme is “Iwannaski Wedding,” and pyramids, jumps, swivel skiing, wakeboarding and barefoot skiing are some of the stunts to be featured in the longstanding team’s annual event.

The show is free and open to the public, and shows will also be offered on Fridays July 12, 19 and Thursday, July 25, all at 7 p.m.

The Oxbow Water Ski Show Team was founded in 1980 by 24 original members, and now has 55 members ranging in age from 1 to 59. Last year, the team placed first for the 11th time in the Eastern Regional Show Ski Competition.

As it does each year, the team opened the ski season this year by skiing on the water only days after the ice broke up on the Connecticut River in April.

The team practices in June and July and performs on Fridays throughout July. This year, practices got off to a slow start with high water due to unseasonable rains, said President Becci Ziemba.

Other team performances this summer will include:

  • July 6 at 4 and 6 p.m., Hartford Riverfest, Riverfront Recapture 50 Columbus Blvd., Hartford, Conn., at the Founders Bridge.
  • July 11, 5 p.m., Greater Easthampton Chamber of Commerce Networking by Night, at the Oxbow Sports Center. This event is $5 for GECC members and $15 for non-members or guests.
  • July 27-28: The 29th annual Eastern Region Ski Show Tournament, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., both days, at the Oxbow Sports Center. This event will include individual act competition on Saturday and team competition on Sunday. Four teams from across the Northeastern U.S. are expected to attend. Admission is free; cost to park is $5. Concessions will be available on site.
